Common questions

Is the State Pension age going up?

Yes. It is rising from 66 to 67 between 6 April 2026 and 5 April 2028, phased by date of birth under the Pensions Act 2014. Anyone born on or after 6 March 1961 has a State Pension age of 67.

When does the State Pension age go up to 68?

Under the Pensions Act 2007 it rises to 68 between 2044 and 2046 for people born on or after 6 April 1977. A review launched in July 2025 is looking at whether to bring that forward. Any change needs new legislation and at least 10 years notice.

I was born in 1960. What is my State Pension age?

Born 6 April 1960 to 5 March 1961: between 66 years 1 month and 66 years 11 months, one extra month for each month of birth. Born before 6 April 1960: 66. Use the calculator above for your exact date.

Can I take my State Pension early?

No. The State Pension cannot be claimed before your State Pension age. You can defer it and get a higher amount later, currently just under 5.8% extra for each full year you put it off (new State Pension).
